Round Horn Lanthorne

3127_1.JPG

This item was offerd on Ebay. The text is what the seller posted.....

One remains in the Concord Museum, the other lost.

OR

is it?

This auction is for a Lanthorne, C. 1750-1760 Period, remaining in good condition.

2) Horn panes are gone, but the door horn is still intact, flawless and original to the piece.

I've been a Collector for more than 20 years, and "Lanthorne's" are not easy to come bye. This Lantern, measure's about 17" tall, metal has been cleaned some time ago, raw tin shows nice patina, once had a handle in the back. Perhaps to be carried up a steep climb to a Tower?

Lanthornes was a English term and was brought over as early as the Mayflower, then known as "Dark Lantern" the term eventually involved to "Lanthorne" and then to Lantern when Mica and glass was later used.

This 'Lanthorne" is completely Authentic and rare to find, the 3) Dormers are solid, the door is solid and the latched hooks up nicely,. I can provide a Hornsmith that can replace the other 2) horn panes if so desired.

As for Paul Revere and his Mid night ride, he wrote that days following the Lanthorne lighting, he was nervous of the limited light they offered, Newman hid 2) lanterns in the church, one with glass panes and the other? Revere mentioned Lanthorne, if only old iron could talk!
